These are the best backpacking layers at EVERY budget! In this video I break down complete sets of backpacking layers at three very different price tiers – $300 vs. $600 vs. $1200! While the cost of all this backpacking apparel varies widely in price, all of it is clothing I endorse for backpacking (or hiking) and I think is worth its cost! When it comes to the ideal set of backpacking layers, the ones you choose and love will likely combine pieces from all three price tiers, just like mine! So at the end of this video I share how I would combine certain apparel from all three budgets to form my personal favorite set of backpacking layers that I take on most of my trips. I hope you enjoy! 💚

  1. I saw a request for the layers I take backpacking! Here is my core set that I use for almost every trip, unless the weather will be extreme:

REI Sahara Shade Hoodie (same as the one in this video that Miranda loves)
REI Trailmade hiking pants (I buy these in one waist size up so they fit a bit loose on purpose to get more breeze to… you know… keep everything cool. 😂 This also allows for base layer bottoms to fit nicely underneath if it’s cold out)
Patagonia R1 Air Fleece (love this thing, but it’s super pricey at $180)
Arc’teryx Cerium down jacket (mine is the one shown in this video)
Outdoor Vitals Tushar rain jacket, just like the one in this video. I aIso have an older model REI rain jacket that’s the pricier one than the Rainier. I don’t think they make it anymore. But a heavier duty one like that is better for if it is gonna REALLY be raining like crazy.
Smartwool mid-weight base layer half zip top – this one: https://alnk.to/deyTACd

I usually only wear base layers in the morning at camp when I’m cold, and take them off before I start hiking. I wear them while sleeping too. I like the half zip base layer top so I can unzip it at night if I am too hot and get some air flow going to cool down. I like Saxx boxer briefs for hiking. I will sometimes wear shorts, but honestly I vastly prefer lightweight and loose fitting athletic pants these days. Just way more protection for my legs from the sun, and also from brush and stuff on trails. My legs got really torn up on a few hikes and so I switched to pants pretty much permanently.

  2. Another option for budget rain jacket : Frogg Toggs Xtreme Lite. It retails at about $70 directly from Frog Toggs but I got mine for $35 through Academy Sports, a few other stores also sell it at a discount year round. Plus, it looks really cool! They are see-through, kind of shiny/metallic, and come in cute colors!

  3. Rewatching because I am getting ready for my AT thru-hike next year and because I realized I am trans and started transitioning earlier this year I need all new hiking clothes. I would love to see a video going over bra options and maybe an updated one on panties if your thoughts have changed since the last one.

  4. Hey Buddy, may I ask what size you roll with in the OV Tushar? I’m torn between Medium + Large to have more hip room?
